Life

Kim Byong -On was born on January 2, 1951 in Daegu. He took his degree in Linguistics at Seoul National University. Seen Literary Kim was a late bloomer, he published his first novel until over forty years. The year after his graduation he spent at five different jobs, including a trading company, a hotel, a construction company and a transportation company. To spend more than two years in a row at a workplace was like for him dull packing, so he had to change not only jobs but also the profession to be satisfied.

During his work in the construction company he worked for some time in a desert region in the Middle East, an experience which he used as a background for his first short story collection. This experience can also be found again in the history of victims to the yellow earth ( 황사 에 바치다 ), which is included in the anthology South Seas ( 남태평양 ).

He had his debut in 1992, as his story Gleanings ( 이삭 줍기 ) in the journal Literature and Society ( 문학 과 사회 ) was published. Then he quit his job to devote himself full-time literature. With different life experiences as a basis, he pursued an orthodox - realistic style, unaffected by the current literary trend. His works are celebrated for their consistent and persistent sincerity.
