Kim Hyesoon

Kim Hyesoon ( born October 26, 1955 in Uljin, Gyeongsangbuk -do) is a South Korean poet.

Life

Kim Hyesoon was born in 1955 in Uljin, in the province of Gyeongsangbuk -do and studied at the Kangwon National University and Konkuk University Korean literature. In 1979 she debuted in the journal Munhak kwa Jisong ( literature and intellect ) with Dambaereul piuneun siin ( poet, smoking a cigarette) and four other poems, and belonged to one of the first women to be published there. Kim gained great notoriety in the late 90s. She was the first woman to receive the prestigious Kim Su -yong Literature Prize.

Kim's central themes of her work is the emancipation and the hoped-for freedom in Korean society, which manifests itself in their experimental, detached from conventions work. It is one of the most famous modern poets Korea.

She currently teaches creative writing at Seoul Institute of the Arts.
