Kim Il-yeop

Kim Il- yeop ( born April 28, 1896 † February 1, 1971 ) was a Korean writer, poet, journalist and South Korean Buddhist nun. She was an early Korean feminist and supporter of the free love movement. Her real name was Kim Won -ju, her nickname was Il- yeop.

Life

Kim lost her parents what their future writing strongly influenced at a young age. She was unhappily married and studied at Ewha Hakdang (the predecessor of Ewha Womans University ) and the Tokyo English Institute. In the 1920s, she was part of the first generation of modern Korean authors. She has published articles as a journalist in the Dong -a Ilbo and Chosun Ilbo. From 1933 she lived after her ordination as a nun until her death at the Buddhist temple of the Jogye Sudeoksa Orderns.
