Life

Kim Sang -ok ( pen name: Ch'ojŏng [ 초정 | 草 汀 | 艸 汀 | 草 丁] ) was born on 15 March 1920 in Ch'ungmu, Gyeongsangnam -do. In 1938 he founded, among others, Kim Yong- ho ( 김용호 | 金 容 浩) and Ham Yun -su ( 함윤수 | 咸 允 洙) together the magazine barley ( 맥 | 麦), in which in 1938 the poems The grain of sand ( 모래알 ) and The Teahouse ( 다방 ) published. Kim published in the same year poems in the magazine Sprout ( 아 | 芽). His Sijo Balsamine ( 봉선화 ) was published in 1939 in the journal set ( 문장 ). In 1941, he won a literary contest with his poem leaves ( 낙엽 ).

During the Japanese colonial rule in Korea, Kim was arrested several times due to intellectual crime. After the liberation of Korea, he taught at the high school Masan, Busan Girls ' High School and the Gyeongnam Girls' High School. In 1956 he founded the Tongyong writer Society ( 통영 문인 협회 ).

Kim began his literary career as a poet of Sijo, in the period after the liberation, he expanded his repertoire but to free verse. His early works are characterized by the brooding attitude of the poet towards the world. Instead of trying to influence the exchange, serve his early poems such as Paek Cha -bu ( 백자 부 ) and winter ( 입동 ) as a passive reflection of the world. This passivity delves into the East Asian subtlety in the poems of his collection The Song of the plateau ( 고원 (故园) 의 곡 ). His poetic world is also a world of poetry, the moonlight, the gourds, and the hair bands, in which the poet is trying to overcome the violence of the past, with the silence in his heart.

This traditional poetry as the basis of his Sijo, Kim makes use of a clear, subtle language to express his desire to liberate the energies of life behind external appearances. In 1963, Kim attempted to modernize the Sijo in his own works, both the seal of Sijo consisting of three lines, as well as consisting of Sijo of three stanzas.
