Kim Soo-young

Kim Soo-young ( born November 27, 1921 in Seoul, † June 16, 1968 in Seoul) was a Korean poet and translator.

Life

Kim Soo-young was born on November 27, 1921 in Seoul. After graduating from the Sunrin Commercial High School he went to study on the way to Japan in order to attend the Tokyo University of Commerce. In 1943 he returned to Korea to escape back to the convening of student soldiers in Japan. A year later he moved with his family to Jilin, Manchuria and teach there at the Jilin High School. At this time he was also heavily involved with the local theater. After the liberation in 1945, he returned to Seoul back to work there as an interpreter and as a senior finally went to the Anglistischen Faculty of Yonhui University, but later renounced to the position.

It was convened by the North Korean army and became a prisoner of war. In 1952, he was dismissed in the POW camp on the island of Geoje, where he worked as an interpreter for the director of the infirmary and for the U.S. Army. Kim later taught English at the Sunrin Commercial High School and started for the magazines Chugan T'aep'yŏngyang ( 주간 태평양 ) and P'ŏnghwa Sinmun ( 평화 신문 ) to work after he returned to Seoul in 1954. The following year he retired and started a poultry farm in his home in order to devote himself to poetry, translation and literary criticism. He died on 16 June 1968.
