At the end of the season he was sixth with 24 points the drivers' world championship - just behind his team-mate Coulthard, who collected 41 points.

In the 2003 season, Raikkonen and McLaren were very optimistic, because you had to compete with a further development of the previous model and was surpassed in 2002 in the battle for second place in the Constructors' World Championship of Williams. But Juha already at the second round in Malaysia at the Sepang International Circuit his first Formula 1 victory. Also during the subsequent chaotic wet race two weeks later in Brazil, Räikkönen was initially evaluated and celebrated after the race was stopped in the 54th round as the winner. Later, however, the race organizers had to admit a mistake and lost his victory Raikkonen back to the first runner-up Giancarlo Fisichella in the Jordan. The tendency of the unexpected competitiveness are also confirmed in the further course of the season, at the end Raikkonen Although no other victory had been able to post, but with a total of ten podium finishes and just two points behind surprise runners-up was behind Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher. Here Raikkonen had until the last race chances of winning the title.

During the 2004 season, the new McLaren MP4 -19, who suffered from cooling problems disappointed. Raikkonen and Coulthard retired from numerous engine failures and other technical defects. Only with the improved version, the MP4- 19B, followed by further podiums and Räikkönen's second Grand Prix victory in Belgium. Raikkonen was founded in 2004 with 45 points seventh in the drivers 'world championship and the McLaren team with 69 points in fifth in the constructors' championship. This Raikkonen was again ahead of his teammate Coulthard, who left McLaren at the end of the season.

In the 2005 season, the new McLaren MP4 -20 showed greatly improved compared to last year. Raikkonen made his new team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya in the internal driver duel no chance, however, the almost faultless driving eventual champion Fernando Alonso in the Renault had to concede defeat. Raikkonen had indeed MP4- 20 the fastest car of the 2005 season are available, which, however, unlike the Renault still had problems with reliability. So Raikkonen retired in three races of the season in the lead because of technical defects of. At the Grand Prix of Europe even in the last round after his suspension was broken as a result of brake disks. Other races he could due to punitive transfers in the grid, which he had received on account of damage to the engine, quit after only comebacks with positions two to four.

In Japan, Räikkönen started from position 17, overtook opponents such as Michael Schumacher and Alonso on the final lap until then leading Fisichella and won the race. Raikkonen was vice-champion in the final for the second time and had 21 points behind Alonso, who had as Raikkonen won seven victories.

For the 2006 season, Räikkönen was still under contract with McLaren was faster than his teammate Montoya as last year. After Montoya and Raikkonen were colliding and excreted in the U.S. Grand Prix in the second curve, the Colombian left surprisingly the team and joined the American NASCAR series. Raikkonen's new team-mate, the previous test pilot Pedro de la Rosa, who had Montoya injury previously been represented in the previous year.

Raikkonen came to the podium six times, went three times to the pole position, but could not win a race. At the Monaco Grand Prix, he had to give up lying with broken heat shield in second place in Hungary in the lead when he collided with Vitantonio Liuzzi lapping and the Grand Prix of Canada took him two botched pit stops for the chance to win. In China, he was in second place until an electronics defect ended his race. His highlight of the season was the first race in Bahrain, where he still drove up from 22 and last place to third place. He was at the end of the season fifth in the Drivers' Championship with 65 points. For McLaren, it was the first winless season since 1996.

At the Italian Grand Prix at Monza was officially announced that Räikkönen in the 2007 season the successor to Michael Schumacher at Ferrari and will be earning an annual salary of around 22 million euros. His new team-mate was the Brazilian Felipe Massa. Even early in his McLaren -Mercedes - era transfer rumors to Ferrari of the press were given repeatedly, but were confirmed in late summer 2006. Raikkonen's McLaren took place at a Alonso, new team-mate of the former World Champion was the former GP2 champion Lewis Hamilton.

Ferrari (2007-2009)

His first victory for Ferrari Raikkonen celebrated the very first race in Australia in 2007, after he had reached the pole position in qualifying. He is the first Ferrari driver since Nigel Mansell, who won in his first race for the Scuderia, and the first driver since Juan Manuel Fangio in 1956, who started from pole in this. In the second race in Malaysia Raikkonen was behind Alonso and Hamilton third. At the Bahrain Grand Prix, he was also third in Spain and he fell for a broken cable to the alternator from. In Monaco, he reached the eighth place, as he in the second qualifying afforded a mistake and had to start 16th. In North America the race he ran fifth in Canada and ranked in fourth place at the race in Indianapolis. At the French Grand Prix Räikkönen was able to win over his teammate Massa. At Silverstone Grand Prix of Great Britain, he could win again and thus celebrate his third win of the season. It was the fifth time in a row that Raikkonen was at Silverstone on the podium.

At the Nürburgring he left third of lying after he took the pole position in qualifying. At the Hungarian Grand Prix, he fought a duel lasting the whole race with Hamilton and was 0.715 seconds behind the McLaren pilots second. At the Turkish Grand Prix he was again second, just behind his team-mate Massa. In his first Italian Grand Prix for Ferrari he finished third after he had survived unhurt in qualifying an accident at 300 km / h and had to contest the race with the spare car. In the Belgian Grand Prix Räikkönen took his fourth victory of the season. In Fuji he went to an extremely difficult race with many accidents in third place. Since Hamilton won the race and goal for his lead in the overall standings to 17 points over Raikkonen, the Finn has been granted only a theoretical chance at the world title. At the 16th World Championship race in China Raikkonen has already achieved his fifth win of the season. With this result he could the gap to the championship leader Lewis Hamilton - of the failure he profited - to shorten at a still races to seven points.

The chances of winning the title were still low. In victory Raikkonen had not been enough for a fifth place title Hamilton or Alonso's second place. After a driving error and a technical problem Hamilton only reached seventh place while Alonso behind Massa, Raikkonen interests of the child itself, only reached the third place. Thus Raikkonen was the first time Formula 1 world champion. Since he made it in his first year with the Scuderia Ferrari, he was able to pull in these statistics with Fangio.

In addition to the world title Räikkönen also won the DHL Fastest Lap Trophy, a 2007 first prize to the logistics group DHL for the driver with the most fastest laps in a season. The Finn won the award as the sole title holder, although his team-mate Massa had just as often the fastest lap of the race ( six times ). In the end, the number of third-best laps Raikkonen decided in favor. A year later he was again awarded this prize.

After excellent reviews of Ferrari in winter Raikkonen went as title favorites in the 2008 season. During the first race in Australia, however, he and his team-mate Massa could not confirm the expectations. Raikkonen finished a turbulent race with the safety car phases, two spins and technical problems ultimately eighth. In the second race in Malaysia, the Finn then celebrated his first victory of the season and took second place in Bahrain the lead in the world championship. In Barcelona he won again, in Turkey, he had to be content with third place behind Massa and Hamilton. At the Monaco Grand Prix Räikkönen lost the championship lead after a botched race and ninth back to McLaren driver Hamilton. In Canada, Räikkönen was initially behind Hamilton and Kubica in third place. After it had been a safety car phase, completed the three leaders their pit stop in which Kubica and Raikkonen could go by Hamilton. Since the pit exit light was switched to red, Kubica and Räikkönen remained standing side by side before the traffic light. Hamilton, who had not seen the lights, drove on Raikkonen and made so that the Finn was forced to retire fault. At the next race in France, he already looked like the sure winner, as a broken exhaust forced him to a slower pace. Nevertheless, he brought two place behind his team-mate Massa to the finish.

During rainy race at Silverstone Raikkonen was nevertheless still fourth after his team had committed a strategy error and the Finn got no new intermediate tires at his first pit stop. After the race in Great Britain were with Hamilton and the two Ferrari drivers Massa and Räikkönen three drivers on points at the top of the drivers' standings. In the following race, however Räikkönen lost some ground on its competitors. From relatively poor grid positions followed meager results in the races - rumors of listlessness and thoughts of resignation to the world champion made the rounds in the press. Raikkonen was announced then, his lack of success would lie in the fact that he had problems getting the tire on his Ferrari on temperature. After his failure by engine failure in Valencia The Finn had 13 points behind leader Hamilton.

The aufschwelende criticism of Raikkonen seemed, given its power to have been a wake up call at the Grand Prix of Belgium. Until three laps to go, the Finn looked like the winner before a shower of rain tore it out of the race, so he went out again empty. Also during the subsequent wet race at Monza Raikkonen managed not to adapt to the weather conditions and missed a ninth championship point.

Regardless, Ferrari announced before the home race of the racing contract extension with the Finn until 2010, thus ending the numerous speculations about a premature withdrawal of Raikkonen.

At the end of the season Raikkonen finished behind his team-mate Massa and the former world champion Hamilton in third place in the World Cup. However, Ferrari was thanks to the achievements of its constructors' world championship ahead of McLaren driver.

In the 2009 season showed early on that Ferrari could not keep up with the teams at the top. Raikkonen, who seemed unmotivated in part, a weak start to the season and remained the first three races without points. With an improved Ferrari Raikkonen announced in Monaco back in third place on the podium. After Raikkonen was unable to repeat this performance in the next three races, he scored at the Hungarian Grand Prix in second place his best result until then. However, the good result of a serious accident, his team-mate Massa was overshadowed, who had to quit due to an injury on the season. After Raikkonen was once again on the podium at the Grand Prix of Europe as a third party, he won his first race in Belgium for over a year. Raikkonen benefited in the race of KERS, an energy recovery system, with whose help he drove starting from sixth on the first lap in second place. After a safety car phase Raikkonen could benefit from KERS and overtook the leader Fisichella again. In another race, he was able to keep the Romans behind him and scored the first win for Ferrari this season. Raikkonen's team-mate in Europe, and Belgium was Ferrari's reserve driver Luca Badoer, he could clearly distance. Due to poor performance Badoer was a few days after the race in Belgium replaced by Fisichella. At the Grand Prix of Italy, the Finn benefited from a failure Hamilton and was third in the fourth race in a row once again on the podium. Also in the other races of the season in which he did not reach podium placement more, Raikkonen was significantly faster than his team-mate Fisichella.

Against the Japanese Grand Prix, it was announced that Räikkönen Ferrari will leave after the season. His cockpit took over from the 2010 season, the Spaniard Alonso, who was already in Raikkonen's McLaren successor. The contract of the Finns, who would have been true in 2010, was dissolved by mutual consent. After contract negotiations with other teams had failed, Raikkonen decided to leave Formula 1 for 2010 and to move to the World Rally Championship.

The points of ICE 1 Racing in the team standings, however, were denied by order of 9 September by the FIA and it was taken out of the World Cup team standings. The reason for this and an additional fine of 16,200 euros was that he had not, as planned, participated in the Rally Australia. The regulations prescribe for a team that is enrolled for brand championship points, at least two races outside Europe before. Raikkonen had called for the Jordan Rally and in Australia, but had waived the participation in Australia. Raikkonen was allowed to start for the remaining three rounds of the World Rally Championship as before.
