Kimitoön (island)

Kimitoön (Swedish; finn Kemiönsaari or short Kemiö ) is an island off the southwest coast of Finland.

Kimitoön located in the eastern part of the Archipelago Sea, about 40 kilometers southeast of Turku and is part of the landscape Varsinais- Suomi. Most of the island belongs to the municipality Kimitoön, which was formed by the merger of the municipalities Kimito Dragsfjärd and Västanfjärd 2009. The area around Angelniemi on the northeast corner of Kimitoön administratively belongs to the town of Salo. With an area of 524 km ² Kimitoön after Fasta Åland, the main island of the Autonomous Province of Åland, the second largest island in the Finnish Baltic Sea waters.

From the mainland Kimitoön is separated only by narrow straits in the north and east. The Strömma channel east of Kimitoön is the only place in Finland, occur on the ebb and flow. The island is connected by two bridges to the mainland. Most of the inhabitants of the island are Finland Sweden, only the area of Angelniemi is traditional Finnish speakers.
