Kinaros

Kinaros (Greek Κίναρος ( f sg ) ) is an uninhabited Greek island of Leros municipality in the South Aegean region.

Location

Kinaros belongs to a group of six small islands and several islets that lie between Leros and Kalymnos Dodekanesinseln the east and the Cycladic island of Amorgos in the West. To the south lies Astypalia. Besides Kinaros with 4.577 km ² island group consists of Plaka in the West, Glaros, the two islands and Mavra Levitha in the east.

On the south side of the island there are some deep, fjord-like bays that offer a natural anchorages protection from northern winds. The western side has steep, inaccessible shores. The typical plants of the maquis and Phrygana dominate the landscape.

History

Due to the geographical location was Kinaros in ancient times an important anchorage for ships traveling between the Cyclades and Dodecanese. It is assumed that there was a small settlement on the island. Building remains could be detected archaeologically.

Kinaros today

After the isolated location of the island was abandoned by its inhabitants in 1960, it was inhabited by fishermen briefly again and again. In 2000, an elderly couple moved back to the island. Residents operated for self-supply some farming and kept a few goats. To power a photovoltaic system was installed. Since there are on the island either landline or mobile phone reception efforts have been made to set up an Internet access via satellite.

Kinaros is of Amorgos or Kalymnos accessible by speedboats. In the summer months offered on Amorgos Day Trips from Leros and Egiali.

Conservation

Kinaros is part of the Natura 2000 site GR 4220012 Nordamorgos, Kinaros, Levitha, Mavria and Glaros ( Βόρεια Αμοργός και Κύναρο, Λέβιθα, Μαυριά και Γλάρος ), as there are occurrences of monk seals, Caspian terrapins and Four strip snakes and at the same time as Important Bird Area GR 163 Kinaros and Levitha Islands and rocky Islets ( Κίναρος, Λέβιθα και βραχονησίδες ) classified as the islands of Eleonora's falcon and Audouin's gulls are visited as nesting sites.
