King Britt

King James Britt ( b. 1968 ) is an American house and techno musician, DJ and label owner. He published under his real name and numerous pseudonyms, of which Oba Funke, Scuba and Sylk 130 among the best known. Britt draws on numerous influences from hip hop, soul, R & B, gospel and jazz in his music.

Life and career

Raised in Philadelphia Britt engaged in since his youth with music and began early to build up an extensive record collection. Beginning of the 1990s he toured first as a DJ with the rap group Digable Planets. Together with Josh Wink he soon produced first own tracks. Under the project name e-culture, both produced in 1990, the single Tribal Confusion which appeared on Strictly Rhythm. Gemeinsamit with Wink Britt founded in 1994 the music label Ovum Records.

Appeared in 1998 Britts debut album When The Funk Hits The Fan, which he produced together with the Sylk 130 Collective, which consisted of Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Darryl Burgee, James Poyser, Alison Crockette, Ursula Rucker, Tony " Capital A" Green and Monnette Sudler. With a cover of Indeep Disco classic Last Night a DJ Saved My Life the project succeeded in 1998, a chart success in the UK.

In addition to his own releases, Britt is also active as a remixer and provided, among other revisions for musicians like Miles Davis, Curtis Mayfield, Radiohead, Alison Moyet, Everything but the Girl and chic.

In 2007 he was included in the Pew Fellowships in the Arts of the Philadelphia-based The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage in the category " composition".
