King of the Gypsies (film)

King of the Gypsies (King of the Gypsies ) is an American film drama from the year 1978. Directed by Frank Pierson, who wrote the screenplay based on a book by Peter Maas.

Action

Zharko Stepanowicz bears the title of king of a group of Roma living in the region of New York City. He is close to death and wants the power passed to his grandson Dave. Dave's father Groffo feels ignored and plotting against his son. The assimilated in American society Dave is ready to relinquish power to his father. He does it finally did not have to preserve the tradition.

Reviews

Vincent Canby wrote in The New York Times 20 December 1978, the melodrama about three generations of gypsies have a lot of color, but little substance. The film WOULD places - the fact that some gypsies would urge the other to Respect the king - like The Godfather.

Dave Kehr called the film in the Chicago Reader as " irrelevant ", " chaotic " and " rambling "; he had no atmosphere or energy. The government was " half-hearted ".
