Separated only by a narrow strip of dunes from the beach, the freshwater Sandwood Loch. The area around Sandwood Bay is part of the John Muir Foundation and forms on this basis, a nature reserve. Between Sandwood Bay and Cape Wrath Durness lies. Since Cape Wrath lies within a military test range, hikes there should be coordinated with knowledgeable local people.
