Kirbla ( German Kirrefer ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the Estonian rural community Lihula in Lääne.

Place

Covering an area of 15.4 km ² live 152 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011) .. Through the village flows the river Kasari ( Kasari Jõgi ).

Kirbla was first mentioned at the beginning of the 16th century under the name Kirpever. It is located about seven kilometers from Lihula ( Leal ) away. In Kirbla is a 33m high "mountain" on which six cult stones and traces could be detected a prehistoric settlement.

From 1931 to 1968, was located two kilometers from the village center, a railway station, which was located on the route between the city and the major ferry port Rapla Virtsu.

In his home village Kirbla Estonian politicians Jüri Uluots (1890-1945) is buried since 2008, who died in exile in Sweden. Uluots was 1939/40, Prime Minister from 1940 to 1945 and acting head of state of the Republic of Estonia.

Church

The parish Kirbla split probably from the 14th century by the parish Lihula. Worth seeing is the St. Nicholas Church of Kirbla which formed the center of the former parish. It is located near a natural limestone terrace, grow on the rare plants in Estonia.

The church was under the Bishop of Osel - Wiek, John III. Orgies ( bishop 1492-1515 ) erected. It was first mentioned in documents in 1531. The single Gottshaus in late Gothic style, with a length of 28.9 m and a width of 11 m one of the smallest in Estonia.

The altarpiece with Christ's ascension comes from 1770, the late Baroque altar from 1783. The lower part of the west tower with its church bell dates from the 18th century, the upper part of the second half of the 19th century. The organ was built in 1850 Carl August Tanton. It was remodeled in the turn of the century by the famous organ builder Estonian Terkmann Gustav ( 1850-1924 ).
