Geographical location
Kirchberg am Wechsel is located in the industrial area in Lower Austria about 100 kilometers south of Vienna, in the valley of Otterbaches, which joins the eastern end of Kirchberg with the Molzbach to Feistritzwerke, at the foot of the bill. The area of the municipality covers 51.17 square kilometers. 67.95 percent of the area is forested.

The market town of Kirchberg am Wechsel divided into six Katastralgemeinden:

In the individual cadastral proportion of forest has different values : Molzegg has 83 % of its floor space most forest, followed by Kranichberg, Alpeltal, fiefs and Ofenbach; Kirchberg has the least forest area by 49 %. A quarter of the land is used for agriculture (fields, meadows ). Here Kirchberg is located at 39% at the top, Molzegg other hand, uses only 12% of its area as grassland and farmland. The remaining 6 % of the land are other areas (roads and the like), construction areas, pastures and gardens.
History
In the core Austrian state of Lower Austria lying, the place itself shared the eventful history of Austria.
The foundation of Wolfgang Church in the municipality 970 goes back to the legend of the Holy Wolfgang. The permanent settlement of the area change was made in the 12th century. 1216, the foundation stone for the later Augustinian Canons woman pin through the Lords of Kranichberg.
The name Kirchberg is first mentioned in a document from the year 1232 ( Kyperk ). Even when the village was raised to market, is not known; He was in any case in 1386, designated as such.
1404 Wolfgang church is mentioned as a chapel.
1472/73 the place was hit by a plague epidemic.
At the time of the First Siege of Vienna ( 1529) place the monastery and church were burned down. After the reconstruction of the monastery, the sisters had to flee in 1554 because of a plague. The following year the monastery was rebuilt and received its present shape.
During the Second Siege of Vienna, the population of Kirchberg refuge in the fortified areas around the church and monastery, but this time it came to any lootings.

1754-1756 the Gothic parish church was demolished and rebuilt in the Baroque style. Up to the spire, the burned in 1829, the stage of construction to date is unchanged.
1782 was the dissolution of the monastery under Joseph II in the same year the consecration of Wolfgang Church was abolished and in 1796 the pillars were blown up.
During the Napoleonic Wars, there was in 1805 and again in 1809 to looting.
1814 and 1833 suffered the place under flood disasters.
1850 emerged the communities Kirchberg am Wechsel, Kranichberg and Molzegg; Kranichberg in 1968, incorporated in 1972 Molzegg to Kirchberg.
From 1859 to 1868, the Wolfgang church was rebuilt; Burned in 1918 after lightning strike, but it was restored several times.
Since 1999, use of the former choir Dominican nunnery as a spiritual center.
