Kirov Islands

The Kirov Islands (Russian Острова ( Сергея ) Кирова, Ostrowa ( Sergeja ) Kirowa ) are an uninhabited group of islands in the Kara Sea off the north coast of Russia. Administratively, the island group belongs to Rajon Taimyr in the Krasnoyarsk region. Are named the islands after Sergei Kirov Mironovich, a major Soviet state and party functionaries.

Geography

The Kirov Islands lie about 140 kilometers north of the Siberian coast, 100 km northwest of the Nordenskiöld Archipelago, and about 180 km south-west of Severnaya Zemlya. The group consists of eight islands that extend from southwest to northeast over a distance of 80 kilometers. The largest and highest island is Issatschenko ( Исаченко ) with 180.6 km ² and 57 m height above the sea. The total area of the archipelago can be roughly estimated at 250-300 km ².

The Kirov Islands are a part of the Bolshoi Arktitscheski Sapowednik, ( Большой Арктический государственный природный заповедник ), the largest nature reserve of Russia.
