Kirov Stadium

The Kirov Stadium (Russian Стадион имени Кирова ) was an athletics and football stadium in St. Petersburg. Prior to its demolition, it offered 72,000 spectators.

History

The Kirov Stadium on the island Krestowski (also known as Cross Island ) was built in the years 1932-1950, the long construction period can be attributed to the Second World War with the 900- day siege traced. From 1950 to 1992, the stadium served as the home stadium for Zenit St Petersburg.

For the football tournament of the 1980 Summer Olympics, the stadium was renovated and the quarterfinal match 3-0 CSSR Cuba took place.

The venerable Kirov Stadium was the venue of the 1994 Goodwill Games. Later it took the second division Dynamo Saint Petersburg as the home stadium. Thus, it was the largest stadium in Europe second division. Began in 2006 with the demolition of the stadium to build in its place the Gazprom - Arena for the Football World Cup 2018.
