Kirr

Kirr is an island south of Zingst on the German Baltic coast in the Darß- Zingster Bodden chain. It is separated from the peninsula by the Zingster current. It is located in the National Park Boddenlandscape. It was formerly and sometimes still now called Big Kirr / Large Kirr. This was to distinguish it from the north-western part of the island. This was still in the second half of the 20th century, an independent island in Zingster power, which was called in contrast to the much larger rest of the island today Kirr Small / Small Kirr.

Geography

The island has a length of 3.5 km and a maximum width of 1.5 km. The only one meter above sea level uplifting island lies in Barth Bodden in the Baltic Sea, just a few meters south of the Zingst. Is the small settlement of Klein Kirr On the east side of the island; in the north are the remains of an old homestead.

Flora and Fauna

The island is covered with salt marshes and crossed by creeks. It offers a variety of birds, especially waders such as Alpine beach runners, ruffs, redshank, black-tailed godwits, oystercatchers, avocets and lapwings but also black-headed gulls, an ideal breeding area. In the fall, it serves several thousand cranes for a few weeks as a sleeping place. Therefore, the entering and applying to the island is prohibited without permission.

History

In 1700 had the Kirr three owners, the Office Barth ( 331.6 acres ), the town of Barth (219 hectares) and the Horn family from Divitz (20 hectares). The island was farmed by a homestead. Mostly, the island was used by several tenants who grazed cattle here and also agricultural. They were also allowed to fish around the island. The Kirr is still used in part as pasture. In order to create the cows to pasture, exists from Zingster district Müggenburg to the island a cattle ferry.
