Kirschenmichel

Cherry Michel ( regionally known as Kirschenplotzer, Körschmichl, Kerschemischel, Jockel cherry, cherry pan, Kirschenmännla, Chirsichlotz ) is a traditional sweet dish of German cuisine and is served mainly in the Palatinate, Baden- Württemberg, Southern Bavaria, southern Hesse and Franconia.

Cherry Michel essentially consists of stale bread or bread that are processed together with butter, milk, egg and sugar to a dough mixture. The dough is folded in with the sweet cherries or sour cherries and when casserole baked in the oven. Vanilla, cinnamon, almonds and cloves can be used for seasoning. The dessert is served warm and is eaten in many families for a traditional soup as a main course.

In combination with white bread creates a lightweight casserole that can be served well in summer temperatures. The recipes vary regionally.

A similar Southern German specialty, but with apples, is the funeral pyre or Ofenschlupfer.
