Kirti Gompa

The Kirti Monastery (Tib. kirti dgon; Chinese Ge'erdeng Si格尔登 寺) is a major monastery of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism in the eastern Tibetan cultural region of Amdo. It is located in the northwest of the greater community Ngawa the circle Ngawa Autonomous Prefecture of Tibetan and Qiang Ngawa in the north of China's Sichuan province. The monastery was founded in 1870. The monastery is a branch monastery of Kirti monastery Lhamo Zoige ( Dzoge ), Sichuan and is currently home to 2,300 monks.

The most important incarnation number of the monastery of Kirti Rinpoche is the (Tib. rin po che kirti; Ge'erdeng huofo格尔登 活佛); goes back to the Rongchen Gendun Gyeltshen ( 1374-1450 rong chen dge 'dun rgyal mtshan ).

Current Situation

On 27 February 2009, the monk Lobsang Trashi lit from the Kirti monastery in himself because he wanted to protest for Tibetan freedom. On 16 March 2011, died a monk of the monastery, Lobsang Phüntshog Jerutshang after he lit himself on fire to mark the third anniversary of an uprising in 2008. Then blocked Chinese security forces under massive protest of the resident population by force the monastery and not allow anyone to leave the monastery or to enter.

On the night of April 21, 300 monks were taken away by the security forces and taken to an unknown location where they would according to Chinese state media subjected to a " campaign in moral education ."

Shortly after the end of September three monks were arrested in connection with the self-immolation of Lobsang Phüntshog Jerutshang, lit again in two Kirti monks, Lobsang Kelsang and Lobsang Könchog. Lobsang Könchog were amputated all four limbs, Lobsang Kelsang is currently in a hospital. Within days, four other monks of the monastery, Kelsang Wangchuk, Khaying, Chöpel and Norbu Damdröl on fire. On October 17 there was the first female victim in this series of self-immolations: the 20 - year-old nun Tenzin Wangmo. Subsequently, a further 9 monks have set themselves on fire from the Kirti monastery. Also two nuns sat himself on fire.
