Kirtipur

Kirtipur ( Newari: किपू Kipu ) is a city in the Kathmandu Valley on a small ridge on the southwestern outskirts of Kathmandu.

Kirtipur is a Newari town founded in the 11th century and one of the centers for the Newari culture in the Kathmandu Valley. It is known for its well-preserved old town with temples and ponds. It is also the seat of the Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu.

History

When taking the Kathmandu valley by Prithvi Narayan Shah in 1767 the Gorkhakönig Kirtipur was part of the Kingdom of Lalitpur. Prithvi Narayan was the only city on the third attempt using a trick play and let all the inhabitants cut off in revenge noses and lips.

Attractions

  • The Bagh Bhairab temple in Nepali Pagoda style located in a temple complex in the higher-lying center.
  • The Chilamchu Bihar is a Buddhist stupa in the old town.
  • Uma Maheshwar, another temple in the pagoda architectural style on the highest point in the Old Town. He is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.
