Kitgum District

Kitgum is a district in northern Uganda, which bordered on the north by Sudan. It has an area of 9773.63 km ². Capital of the district is the same place Kitgum, 452 km from the Ugandan capital Kampala. The district has, according to the census of 2002 a population of 283 546, which by the movements of refugees and the large number of refugee camps due to the rebels fighting the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA ) may vary the actual population. The inhabitants live largely of subsistence farming.

Kitgum and Pader to Gulu forms, together with the Acholi land, which is the main area of ​​the Acholi people. Until December 4, 2001 Paderborn was also one of Kitgum, but was then separated. Kitgum now consists of two counties, Lamwo and Chua.

Apart from regular plundering of the LRA, the population of the area has traditionally suffered from livestock thefts that are committed with the participation of Lango groups, the further east settled Karamojong and cross-border population to the South Sudanese Imatong Mountains ( Buya, Lotuko, Didinga ). The resulting feuds were previously discharged with spears and are today with modern weapons. Lotuko who are also victims of LRA attacks are blamed on the Ugandan side of the looting of fields.
