Klek (Zrenjanin)

Klek ( Serbian Cyrillic Клек, Romanian: CLEC also Klekk or Begafó ) is a place in the Serbian Banat and belongs to the administrative area of ​​the city Zrenjanin.

History

Danube Swabians began after the retreat of the Ottoman Empire with the settlement of the riverbank and founded the "old" Klek in 1766 on a marshy area between the rivers Timis and Bega. They managed agricultural land and began the cultivation of corn, sugar beets, hemp, tobacco, sunflower, poppy and additional vegetables and fruits.

Repeated flooding of the place the old village was finally abandoned and founded on the site of today dab around 1818 new.

Descendants of the first settlers dab survived to the end of World War II in the village. After the defeat of the Axis powers escaped the majority of the German community for fear of reprisals or were expelled. For the most part the settlers returned after more than 150 years back to Germany, which were once very large and influential community of the Danube Swabians has almost completely disappeared in the Western Banat.

Demography

In Klek live according to a census from 2002 total 2394 persons of age in 873 households. The average age of residents is 38.9 years ( 37.9 in male and 39.9 in female population). The village has a Serb majority and recorded a slight increase in the number of inhabitants.
