The Klyuchevskaya Sopka (Russian Ключевская сопка ), also Kljutschewskoi Volcano (Russian Ключевской Вулкан ) on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia is the highest active volcano in Eurasia. The approximately 8,000 -year-old volcano is the largest active volcano in Asia and is one of the Pacific Ring of Fire. He is the highest volcano in the densely positioned twelve stratovolcanoes that form the Klutschewskaja Group (also known by the names of the two main volcanoes as Kljutschewskoi - Besymjanny - volcanic complex ). It includes, for example, the Kamen and Ploski Tolbachik.

Geology

Klyuchevskaya Sopka reached their extraordinary high, because it is grown up from the side of a large older volcano. On this basis, they piled on a good 3000 meters high, almost perfect cone. With its overall height of the volcano towers over its competitors significantly Koryaksky (3300 m) and Kronozki ( 3100 m), which originated in deeper layers. Its tip is covered by the Erman and Schmidt Glacier. Their shape is cone-like ( conical). The terrain consists of volcanic rubble, interrupted by fields of snow and ice.

Volcanic activity

1697 registered Vladimir Atlasov the first recorded outbreak during a hike through the Kamchatka.

Average breaks the volcano every five years from, in some periods even a year, sometimes continuously over the course of 2 years. The largest outbreak of 1944/45 was carried out by the main crater.

Further eruptions were observed in 1994 and in the fall of 2003, while in 1994 the volcano sent its ash plume to an altitude of 20 kilometers.

Since August 2009, the volcano also shows again an increased activity. Smaller craters with 60 to 200 m expansion at distances of eight to 25 km from the main crater are also active and contribute to the volcanic activity in.

Tourism

The volcano is located in the Natural Park Kljutschewskoi, which is also known under the name of volcanoes of Kamchatka. 30 km away is the place Kljutschi from which the name of the volcano comes. Distance from nearest major city Petropavlovsk -Kamchatsky is about 600 km, a popular climbing route goes from Kozyrevsk from across the saddle between the Klyuchevskaya Sopka and the Kamen volcano. The saddle is located at about 3300 m. From there, one can well begin to summit ascent. At the foot of the volcano are located at about 1000 meters altitude three volcanological stations that are also mountain huts. Depth torrent valleys carved landscape on 1000 m. Trails are partially characterized by heaps.

The first ascent was made in 1788 by the mountain guide Daniil Gaus as part of the Billings Sarytschew Expedition ( 1785-1793 ).
