Knut Johannesen

Knut " Kupper'n " Johannesen ( born November 6, 1933, Oslo ) is a former Norwegian speed skater.

Johannesen won in 1957 and 1964 all-around world championships and the 1959 and 1960 all-around European Championships. At the 1956 Olympic Games in Cortina d' Ampezzo, he won a silver medal over 10,000 meters and the 5000 meters silver. Four years later, in Squaw Valley, he became Olympic champion over 10,000 meters. 1964 in Innsbruck he won gold again over 5000 meters and bronze in the 10,000 meters.

Johannesen presented during his playing days on four world records. He led the Peerage 1960-1964 for 1,100 days. Its maximum value was 178.358 points.

In 1957 he was honored with the Morgenbladet gold medal and 1959 awarded the Oscar Mathisen Memorial Trophy. In 1960 he won the election to Norway's Athlete of the Year as well as the Fearnleys olympiske ærespris.
