Kőbánya

Kőbánya ( " quarry " ) is the name of the tenth arrondissement ( district X ) in Budapest.

The plane municipality covers an area of 32.5 km ². With a population of 77,600 ( in 2003) it is below the districts of Budapest in twelfth position. The population density is 2,388 inhabitants per km ². The district consists of twelve districts:

History

Kőbánya is one of the typical industrial areas in Budapest. In 1874, the population was 7,650 people, but increased as a result of industrialization by the year 1910 to 52,000. 1896 Budapesti Gyűjtőfogház was built, which was long regarded as the largest prison in Central Europe.

In today's urban area, several quarries, which is also the name of the district derives were. After their retirement, the empty caves were converted into the basement and used for a beer factory.

In Kőbánya there were also several large landfills that have already been restored to a large extent. The residential district Újhegy example, was built on a man made garbage dump.

Economy

Since the regime change, the industrial importance of the area has decreased. Some larger companies:

The private television company Magyar ATV is headquartered in the 10th district. Most studios are located in the building of Kőbányai Mozi ( " Cinema Kőbányai ").

Attractions

The historicist Plebanerkirche Szent László was built according to plans by Odon Lechner. The tower is covered with a ceramic roof of Vilmos Zsolnay. Also located in the 10th district of Csősztorony ( " Watchtower ").
