Hohenems is a town in the district of Feldkirch in Vorarlberg Austria with 4345 inhabitants ( 31 December 2013 ).

Geography

Hohenems is located in the westernmost province of Austria, Vorarlberg, in the district of Feldkirch to 456 meters. Quarters are: Au, Dürne, road houses, Neuburg, Udelberg.

Neighboring communities

Hohenems has a common municipal boundary with seven other municipalities, six of which are just as Koblach Austrian municipalities in the district of Feldkirch. The Austrian neighboring communities Koblachs the community Mäder, the market town Götzis, the communities Klaus and Roethis, the market town and the municipality rank Because Meiningen. On the western side of the Rhine Koblach borders also on the community Oberriet in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen.

History

Already in the Middle Stone Age, about 7000 years ago, there were settlements in the municipality. In 1952, human remains from the Middle Stone Age ( about 7500 BC) discovered at the foot of Kummenbergs in the course of excavations.

In the Middle Ages Hohenems was a royal court of Guelph - based on the Neuburg. Hugo von Tumb sold in 1363, the castle and lordship Neuburg to the Dukes of Austria - right in the territory of Montfort.

Hohenems in 1675 for their own parish. From 1805 to 1814, the town belonged to Bavaria, then back to Austria. The Habsburgs ruled the areas in Vorarlberg changing of Tyrol and Further Austria ( Freiburg im Breisgau) - they took over in 1852, the pledge shaft.

For the Austrian state of Vorarlberg Hohenems heard since its founding in 1861.

In 1888, many buildings and large areas of the municipal area were destroyed in a flood Rhine. The place was from 1945 to 1955 part of the French zone of occupation in Austria.

Education

At the site there are 436 students in a main and an elementary school (as of January 2003). In Hohenems, there are also two kindergartens.
