Bladder Ash ( Koelreuteria paniculata )

Koelreuteria is a genus within the family of Soapberry ( Sapindaceae ). The only three species are native to East Asia. The sometimes be the German common name bladder or bladder ash trees according to their feathery leaves that resemble those of ash, and her bubbly fruit, but often only for the type Koelreuteria paniculata used.

Description

Appearance and leaves

In Koelreuteria species are evergreen or deciduous trees or shrubs that reach heights of growth of up to 15 meters. The change-constant leaves are all kinds relatively large and single or double, paired or unpaired pinnate.

Inflorescences and flowers

In loose to dense, large, pyramidal paniculate inflorescences, the flowers are borne. The yellow, zygomorphic flowers are four - or fünfzählig double perianth. There are usually five, rarely four sepals present. The four or five, rarely, six petals have zweigelappte scales at the base. There are eight free stamens present. Three carpels are fused into a superior ovaries. It is a thick disc present.

Fruit and seeds

The capsule fruits usually have a first pink, later brownish coloring, bubble -shaped shell; they each contain three black seeds.

Systematics and distribution

The first publication was in 1772 in Novi Commentarii Academiae Scientiarum Imperalis Petropolitanae, 16, pp. 561-562, there as " Koelrevteriam ". Type species is Koelreuteria paniculata Laxm .. The generic name honors the German botanist Joseph Koelreuteria Gottlieb Kölreuter.

The genus contains three East Asian species:

  • Koelreuteria bipinnata Franchet ( Syn: Koelreuteria bipinnata var apiculata How & Ho, Koelreuteria bipinnata var puberula Chun, Koelreuteria bipinnata var integrifoliola ( Merrill ) TCChen, Koelreuteria integrifoliola Merrill. ): It is a deciduous species from China with double pairs feathery leaves.
  • Koelreuteria elegans ( Sailor) ACSmith: It has evergreen or deciduous, twice pinnate leaves. There are two subspecies: Koelreuteria elegans ( Sailor) A.C.Smith subsp. elegans
  • Koelreuteria elegans subsp. formosana ( Hayata ) FGMeyer ( Syn: formosana Hayata Koelreuteria, Koelreuteria henryi Dummer ): It occurs only in Taiwan.
