A Koenen's tumor (pronounced Ku: NEN - tumor), also known as periunguales fibroma ( periungual =, around the nail ') or subungual fibroma ( Subungual =, under the nail ' ), is a benign mesenchymal tumor ( a fibroma ), which the foot or toe nails produced in the region.

Description

Koenen tumors are a symptom of tuberous sclerosis ( also called Pringle 's disease ), an autosomal dominant hereditary disease. The benign tumors are skin-colored nodes that form in the foot or toe nails or beneath the nails and are typically 3-7 mm in size.

Therapy

Koenen tumors may optionally be removed surgically by excision or by CO2 laser.

Naming

The Koenen's tumor is named after the Dutch neurologist Joannes Henricus Maria Koenen, the 1932 photographic abbildete him for the first time in an article. The first description was in 1903 by the Munich physician Richard Kothe.
