KompoZer

KompoZer is a free software for editing HTML pages. He is an HTML editor as WYSIWYG, meaning that web pages by writing the content and graphic clicks together and can be created by formatting and formatting elements, without having to edit the source code by hand.

He is as free software triple licensed under the Mozilla Public License ( MPL), the GNU General Public License ( GPL) and the GNU Lesser General Public License ( LGPL) distributed and is available for Linux, Windows and Mac OS X. The file size of version 0.8b3 is operating system dependent approximately 6-15 MB; Windows for a stand-alone version is available.

KompoZer has emerged from the Nvu program. As with NVU (since 2006) is resting now but also in KompoZer (since 2010) the further development.

Functions

In addition to the WYSIWYG HTML editor, an FTP module for transmission of finished pages to a web server and a special editor for CSS style rules are included. KompoZer is expandable with additional program modules and themes. Framesets it can not handle.

Technology

To view the edited files as well as its own user interface, the Gecko rendering engine from the Mozilla project is being used.

History

Originally, the program was developed by Netscape Communications Corporation proprietary software. Netscape introduced in 1996 an application suite called Netscape Communicator to the then important Netscape Navigator Web browser out. This contained in the so-called gold version an HTML editor component called Composer. With the release of Netscape as free software in 1998, this software bundle was continued as Mozilla Application Suite in the Mozilla project and further maintained the Netscape suite on the basis of the developed code there. Ever since, the source code multiple licensed under GPL, LGPL and MPL freely available for everyone.

Nvu

As the development concept for the Mozilla software changed and the program package has been developed further divided, the stand-alone software Nvu arose from the editor component (pronounced " n -view " for English, " new view", translated: " new view "). Nvu was developed by the French company Disruptive Innovations on behalf of the company Linspire. The abgeheuerte Netscape developer Daniel Glazman was still responsible in the Mozilla project for the editor component of the suite.

From Nvu developments should flow back into the Mozilla project and it worked XULRunner on a port of a stand-alone version of Composers on Mozilla's widget toolkit, in which case there the further development of the suite was abandoned as a whole. So this code reflux never came, although the development of the suite was resumed as SeaMonkey.

KompoZer

After no new versions were published by Nvu since 28 June 2005 ( Version 1.0), the Community unofficial troubleshooting versions began due to poor maintenance of Nvu under the name KompoZer surrendered. In 2006, Glazman announced the official end of its development work on Nvu and announced a follow-up software.

As Nvu was officially abandoned, the rights to the name Nvu but remain with the company Linspire, now all development with the support of the Mozilla Foundation in the KompoZer project takes place. The last release of KompoZer was a beta 3 version to end of February 2010 (see below) As a development version, it is not yet provided for productive operation, how it works, for example, synchronization is not yet templates.

It is currently not clear if and when newer versions will appear.
