The name and the official slogan "Beer of Royal Highness " comes from the fact that the brewery which is through their brands König Ludwig Dunkel and "König Ludwig Weissbier " known primarily goes back to the Bavarian royal house and still a Wittelsbach, Prince Luitpold of Bavaria, the management holds.

Locations

Besides Fürstenfeld Bruck Castle is cold mountain ( Landkreis Landsberg am Lech), City of Prince Luitpold of Bavaria, the second brewery.

History of the brewery

Already in 1260 the house of Wittelsbach founded the first brewery, a little later ( 1292 ) built Duke Rudolph the cold mountain castle. It is believed that since then at that point beer is brewed. After a long eventful history, it came back in 1955 in the possession of the Wittelsbach dynasty, which had previously dominated by the Bavarian Purity Law and the over 200 -year-long wheat beer monopoly the Bavarian brewing art. Since then, the old Bavarian royal coat of arms adorns the caps of the bottles ( the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan in Freising uses the similar, old Bavarian arms of 1923).

The Castle Brewery in its present form was founded in 1870 and joined in 1920 the Munich brewery Union (now Löwenbräu ) at. Since 1955, the brewery is owned by the Wittelsbach family again, 1976 takes over Prince Luitpold of Bavaria castle and brewery. Since then, the reputation of the beers was significantly increased (especially by taking place since 1979 cold Ritterturnier ) and production: 2004 340,000 hectoliters were brewed, of which only 100,000 in Cold Mountain. The rest is produced at the current headquarters in Fürstenfeldbruck just 20 kilometers away, which was incorporated in 1980 through the acquisition of Fürstenfeldbrucker Marthabräu the cold mountain brewery. Far more beer under the name Cold Mountain is, however, brewed under license overseas.

Cold Mountain and the Oktoberfest

To a possible participation of the castle brewery at Munich's Oktoberfest, a bitter and media- prone lawsuit is filed for more than 20 years. Because even though the festival was launched on the occasion of the wedding of Ludwig I by the Wittelsbach in life, the Wittelsbach brewery may not participate today because this just Munich operations are permitted.

Prince Luitpold of Bavaria suspected behind this scheme a cartel of (now mostly under foreign control ) United Breweries and relies in turn on the royal tradition ( the first festival was even served beer from Vienna) and the support of the population ( Prince of Bavaria expects provide that the opening of the Oktoberfest would reduce for breweries from the surrounding area the price of beer at the Oktoberfest drastically ). Yet every year rejected his application by the relevant organizing committee again.

Numerous protests have not helped so far: one organized by him "alternative Brauer collection " earned him a caution for obstruction of traffic a as he tried to avoid the exclusion by setting up a " mobile brewery ", the statutes were quickly changed, and a small brewery in a Munich guest house got no operating license.
