History

814 founded by Benedict Aniane ( 750-821 ) with the Emperor Louis the Pious, successor of Charlemagne, as a consultant, the monastery Kornelimünster on the river Inde. The monastery was first as Saviour Monastery on the Inde, short Inda known.

Middle of the 9th century, the monastery was rich and immediately received large land holdings and the so-called biblical or Salvator sanctuaries: Schürztuch, napkin and grave cloth of the Lord.

875 half of the grave cloth against a head relic of the martyr Pope Cornelius († 253) was traded. The monastery was then Sancti Cornelii ad Indam, later Kornelimünster called. Today is the official title of Abbey of the Holy Abbot Benedict of Aniane and Pope Cornelius.

1500, the Imperial Prince Kornelimünster Abbey became part of the Lower Rhenish-Westphalian Circle.

1802 was the Kornelimünsterer territory to France. The imperial abbey was abolished like other monasteries in French-occupied Rhineland, in the same year with a Regulation of the French government to secularization and the monks had to leave the monastery. Kornelimünster was a Mairie in Canton Burtscheid. 1815 Kornelimünster fell to Prussia and was a mayor part of the district of Aachen in the district of Aachen. 1906 came back after Benedictine Kornelimünster and founded the New Benedictine Kornelimünster. The old abbey church of St. Cornelius is now the parish church of the village, the old abbey buildings are owned by the State of North Rhine -Westphalia.

1971 pleaded Kornelimünster together with Breinig, Mulartshütte, Roetgen, Venwegen and Walheim for the formation of a community Munsterland. But the Kornelimünsterer territory was divided on 1 January 1972 from siedlungsgeografischen considerations as follows: Kornelimünster / Walheim became a city district of Aachen and Breinig and Venwegen went to Stolberg.
