Kosa Pan

Kosathibodi Chaophraya ( Thai: เจ้าพระยา โก ษา ธิ บ ดี, "Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade ", actually Pan ( ปาน ) or nickname Kosa Pan ( โก ษา ปาน ) * before 1650, † 1700 in Ayutthaya ) was a Siamese diplomat and statesman. He is best known for his successful diplomatic mission from Siam to Europe in 1686th

Relationship

Kosa Pan was the younger brother of Phraklang (Finance Minister) Lek ( เหล็ก ) ( † 1683) and a nephew of the king Ekathotsarot (reigned 1605-1610 ). It is believed that Kosa Pan and his brother had the same nurse as the future King so that they enjoyed special favors. His descendants include the late founder of the Chakri Dynasty of Siam, King Rama I (reigned 1782-1809 ).

Embassy to France in 1686

1686 Kosa Pan of King Narai the Great ( r. 1656-1688 ) accompanied with two other envoys sent to Europe ( Ok- luang Kanlaya Ratchamaitri and Ok- khun Sisawan Wacha, to establish or deepen friendly relations with France. Alexandre The Siamese de Chaumont ( 1640-1710 ) and François- de Choisy Timoléon to France, who came to Siam in 1685. Besides was the Jesuit Guy Tachard on the way back to France. Kosa Pan and his company brought the offer of an eternal alliance between Siam and France. He remained between June 1686 and March 1687 in Europe.

The mission of Kosa Pan caused a sensation, not only in France but throughout Europe. One landed in Brest and embarked on a journey to Versailles to King Louis XIV

Siamese revolution of 1688

Kosa Pan was one of the main supporters of Phetracha, the opponent of King Narai after his return to Ayutthaya. Phetracha turned off Narai and referred the French people of the country. Kosa Pan was his Phraklang ( foreign and trade ministers). In 1690 he met the German scholar Engelbert Kaempfer, who was on a long trip to Asia.

Later life

1699 received Phetracha Kosa Pan and the Jesuit Father Guy Tachard, but it remained at a formal exchange. A short time later Kosa Pan fell out of favor and died in June 1700 de a result of abuse.
