Kostel Castle ( Castrum Grauenwarth )

Kostel is known by the originally second largest castle complex in Slovenia. The castle was first mentioned in 1336 and stands on a rock above the Kolpatal In 1808 and 1809 she was destroyed by the French and not rebuilt. But the so-called Lower Castle was later renewed. In 1943 the castle was finally burned down by the partisans. Since 1999, the castle stands as a monument of national importance under protection. The system is also interesting as archaeological site ( ceramics, pottery ).

The system consists of the Upper ( Zgornji grad) and Low Castle ( Spodnji grad), the Church of the Epiphany and the settlement Trg ( German: market ) have remained within the castle walls, which still preserved. Previous owners of the castle were the Ortenburgers. After the death of Count Frederick II in 1418 it fell to the Counts of Celje, which have expanded the castle and have renamed Grauenwarth. They built a two meter wide fortification wall with five towers. The fortress served to protect their krainer and Cillier possessions and later defense against the Turks. Thus she was a part of the Military Frontier. The Turks attacked Kostel, lying on one of its most important routes of incidence, for the first time in 1476 at. After the death of the last Count of Celje, Ulrich II whose possessions were in 1456 to the Habsburg dynasty. The last owner of the castle was Countess Ana, granddaughter of Count Laval Nugent.

The castle is owned by the Republic of Slovenia, but is to be transferred in June of 2014 at the Kostel municipality because the state plans to divest some of its castles, for which he has no means of obtaining. The community itself, however, is deeply in debt. With only about 680 inhabitants, it is compared with other municipalities of Slovenia in fourth place in terms of the per capita debt. The facility is now available for 73 977 euro for sale, although still a renovation in the amount of 6 million euros was planned by the state about 10 years ago. Although renovations were started, but stopped at the so-called third construction phase. Thus neither installs nor heating.
