Kostelec nad Labem

Kostelec nad Labem ( German Elbekosteletz, formerly Elbkosteletz ), is a city in the Czech Republic. It is 20 kilometers northeast of the city center of Prague and is part of the Okres Melnik.

Geography

Kostelec nad Labem is located on the left side of the Elbe at the confluence of Mratínský and Poleradský creek creek in Mill Spring.

Neighboring towns are Rudec, Chrást and Kozly in the north, and Ovčáry Dřísy in the northeast, Krenek and Záryby in the east, Polerady in the south, Mratín the southwest, Nová Ves in the west and Čakovičky and Jiřice in the northwest.

History

The city area was already inhabited during the Stone and Bronze Ages. The first mention of lying on the left bank of the Elbe on a trade route between Brandeis and Melnik old village Kostelec dates from the year 1276. Was located on the Elbe a stronghold of Přemyslids which Ottokar II in 1276 left to Boreš Osek. After Boreschs death Kostelec fell back to the Přemyslids and belonged to Queen Elizabeth. Later it came into the possession of the crown of Bohemia.

1424 Kostelec was besieged by Žižka and the allied army in Prague. In 1448 acquired Kuneš Rozkoš of Dubé the city. From the 19th century to the end of the Cold War was Elbekosteletz or Kostelec nad Labem, a garrison town.
