The Kotorosl (Russian Которосль ) is a river in the European part of Russia and a right tributary of the Volga.

General Description

The 132 km long and at normal water level up to about 60 meters wide river flowing through the Yaroslavl Oblast and flows into the Volga River in the center of the city of Yaroslavl, which was created according to the city's founding legend at the exact Kotorosl estuary. The source is located near the city of Rostov, where the Kotorosl by the confluence of two small rivers Ustje and Wjoksa (the latter is an outflow of Lake Nero ) is formed. In a flood that occurs usually in April or May, the river width in some places can reach up to one kilometer.

On a large part of its course, as well as within Yaroslavl front of the mouth, the Kotorosl is very rich in loops, just downstream of the town Gavrilov -Jam flows in places, through a straight valley. Even in the city of Yaroslavl are the banks of the Kotorosl - apart from a section of the left bank in the amount of the historic center, where there is also a waterfront - not built over and comparatively unspoilt.

The Kotorosl is not navigable, but is often ridden in the summer months of private small boats. The scenery along its banks are considered attractive and are a popular recreation area with dachas and sanatoriums.

Etymology

The hydronym Kotorosl, alternatively known before the 20th century as Kotorost, the Finno-Ugric language of the Merja could come, of that people, large parts of what is now central Russia populated in the first millennium AD: Some researchers suggest that Kotorosl from Merja word for " loop- rich river " was derived. The other common version claims a purely Russian origin of hydronyms: Kotorost of kotoratsja, an obsolete verb for " bickering " or " fight ". Thus, " arguing " the two river Ustje and Wjoksa, showing the Kotorosl, which both now the right Kotorosl and which is the only one tributary.
