Koukonisi (Greek Κουκονήσι (n. sg. ) ) Is a small uninhabited Greek island in the Gulf of Moudros ( Κόλπος Μουδρου ) the island of Limnos. The island is located north of Moudros and is one of its district. Koukonisi can be reached via a paved road from the coast about 400 meters away.

History

A network of Early Bronze Age settlements dating from the 3rd millennium BC could be detected by systematic excavations in Myrina and Koukonisi whose level of development similar to that in Poliochni. Because of surface finds in the northern part of the island colonization is already suspected in the Neolithic period.

The preferred location in the Gulf of Moudros enabled the permanent settlement for more than two thousand years. On the one hand it is one of the safest natural harbors in the Aegean, on the other hand, enabled the largest and most fertile part of the island of Limnos agricultural overproduction for trade. Since today is the depth of the sea at about 0.50 meters, Koukonisi formed probably formerly a peninsula.

The analyzes of three field seasons (1992, 1994-1996 and 1999) show a continuous settlement since the beginning of the 3rd millennium BC, with a flowering period of settlement in the early and middle Bronze Age. Twice the destruction of the settlement by an earthquake is detected. Stone paving and drainage system are occupied for about 2500 BC. Finds of Mycenaean as characteristic clay figures testify to the existence of a permanent Mycenaean settlement 1400-1100 BC. Successive phases of construction, as well as the amount and variety of high-quality findings prove intense trade relations with Troy, the Greek mainland and the central Aegean and Crete.

Today is operated on the island of cereal crops.
