Krauss-Maffei ML 500 C

The Industrial and locomotive ML 500 C was built by Krauss -Maffei 1954-1966.

History

The locomotives of the type ML 500 C are similar designed and constructed as the V 36 and the smaller sister ML series 440 C. The cab is in contrast to the V 36 is shifted slightly more towards the center of the vehicle and located slightly increased. Thus, better visibility revealed. The drive of the axes is arranged on a vehicle in a blind end of the shaft via the coupling rods. The wheelbase is 3 m, so that very narrow track radii can be driven up to 50 m radius. Also, the low axle load, depending on the type 16 to 18 t was very interesting for industrial enterprises.

The machines were supplied as standard with a high-speed Mercedes -Benz Engine Type MB 836 Bb. The engine achieved by a turbocharger, a power of 500 hp. Since, in contrast to the ML 440 C instead of the MAN engine, the smaller MB - engine was used, the front hood is achieved far lower. She could be reduced to the extent that space for a round created. It is also known that the MB engine could be replaced in the course of a mature revision by a Caterpillar 3412 DI -TA.

Through the acquisition of Wilhelm Burger industrial railway arrived in 1962 two copies in the existence of the German Federal Railways, which this now as the class V 50 classifying. However, since sufficient locomotives of the series V 60 were available, the two loners were sold in 1964.

Much of the built locomotives is now retired and whereabouts are unknown. On the website " rangierdiesel.de " about twenty preserved locomotives are documented. It is also the former V 50 001 German Federal Railways, which is still preserved today and is used by the Swabian Alb- Bahn GmbH.
