Kuala Kubu Bharu

In Kuala Kubu in the district of Hulu Selangor in Selangor, Malaysia, in February 1883 there was a dam break at the river at Selangor, in which there were at least 25, maybe even several hundred deaths. The city of Kuala Kubu was destroyed and later rebuilt on a hill as Kuala Kubu Baru again.

The tragedy of Kuala Kubu

Due to the tidal wave of water and mud, which flooded the site in February 1883, many residents were drowned or lost their homes. Among the flood victims was the 26 -year-old Cecil ranking, an employee of the British administration, as Malaysia was at that time under British colonial administration. The old town was flooded with mud and most of the facilities of the city severely damaged. A Buddhist temple and a mosque survived the flood.

Rebuilding

After the disaster, the British government decided to close to the remains of Kuala Kubu to build a new city. The new city called Kuala Kubu Bharu, Kuala Kubu what new means. It is the district capital of Hulu Selangor. The abandoned old city is now called Ampang Pecah ( = "broken dam " or " Broken Dam" ). Since the 1980s, is being built again in the old city. There is also a monument in memory of the spill.

The new dam

A few years ago, only little has been built a new dam below the old place, the Selangor Dam ( Sungai Selangor Dam ). Sungai means " river ". This happened against considerable resistance of the people. The new dam is 115 m high, 800 m long, dammed up to 235 million cubic meters and flooded 6 km ² with a catchment area of 197 km ². It is 4 km above Kuala Kubu.
