The University of Kumamoto ( Jap熊 本 大学, Kumamoto daigaku, in short: Kumadai (熊 大) ) is a state university in Japan. The main campus is located in Kurokami, Kumamoto in Kumamoto Prefecture.

History

The University has its origins in 1756, founded the hospital Saishunkan (再 春 馆, German "House of again coming spring " ) and in the medicinal plant garden Banjien (蕃 滋 园, dt " garden with more border and bewachsenden plants" ); its founder was Shigekata Hosokawa (细 川 重 贤, 1721-1785 ), the daimyo of Kumamoto Han. The Kumamoto han was abolished in 1871 and the hospital was a public hospital to the private Medical School Kumamoto in 1896. In 1922 she became the prefectural Medical School Kumamoto and 1929, then to the state Medical School Kumamoto (熊 本 医科大学, Kumamoto ika daigaku ).

1949, the Kumamoto University was founded through the merger of six state schools in Kumamoto. The six were:

  • Medical School Kumamoto,
  • The Fifth High School (第五 高等学校, Dai -go Kōtō Gakko, founded in 1887 ),
  • The pilot Kumamoto (熊 本 工业 専 门 学校, Kumamoto Kōgyō Semmon Gakko, founded in 1906 ),
  • The Pharmaceutical Trade School Kumamoto (熊 本 薬 学 専 门 学校, Kumamoto Yakugaku Semmon Gakko, founded in 1885 ),
  • The Normal School Kumamoto (熊 本 师范学校, Kumamoto shihan Gakko, founded in 1874 ), and
  • Youth Normal School Kumamoto (熊 本 青年 师范学校, Kumamoto his shihan Gakko, founded in 1920 ).

The main campus ( Kurokami - campus) is the former seat of the Fifth High School and the pilot Kumamoto. The schools were established in May 1887 as State Fifth Higher Middle School (第五 高等 中 学校, Dai -go Kōtō chūgakkō ). She had first the preparatory course for the Imperial University. She later founded the medical school ( in Nagasaki in Aug. 1887 ) and the technical faculty ( 1897). In 1894 it was renamed the Fifth High School. 1901 introduced the medical faculty to the Medical Technical School Nagasaki (now Nagasaki University ) and in 1906 the technical faculty of the Higher Technical School Kumamoto (熊 本 高等 工业 学校, Kumamoto Kōtō Kōgyō Gakko ), which was renamed in technical Kumamoto 1944. Lafcadio Hearn and Natsume Soseki were the teachers at the Fifth High School for several years. The main building of the Fifth High School ( built in 1889 ) remains today as a university museum. The main building of the pilot plant ( built in 1924 ) is now the administrative building of Kumamoto University.

The former garden of medicinal plants Banjien was closed in 1890 and the plants were donated to the Fifth Higher Middle School. So the medicinal plant garden of the University, the daughters of the plants of the Banjiens.
