Kumar Sangakkara

Kumar Sangakkara Chokshanada ( Sinhala: කුමාර් සන්ගක්කාර ) (born 27 October 1977 in Matale, Sri Lanka ) is a Sri Lankan cricket player and was between 2009 and 2011 captain of the cricket team of Sri Lanka. The left-hander played primarily as a batsman ( hitter ) and as a wicket-keeper.

Career

The first appearance in international cricket Sangakkara had the age of 22 in July 2000 when he played an ODI against Pakistan. The first Man of the Match award he won in his second ODI, as he scored 85 runs against South Africa. His Test debut, he completed the same month against South Africa. The first double century succeeded during the Asian Test ChampionChip event in 2002 when he reached 230 runs. In 2009 he was appointed vice-captain of the national team, as captain Marvan Atapattu, the former injured. During a test in July of the year then succeeded him also the highest Runzahl his career when he scored in a world record partnership with the captain Mahela Jayawardene 287 of 684 runs. During the attack on the cricket team of Sri Lanka at Lahore in 2009 Sangakkara was slightly injured, but was soon reinstated. A short time later he was promoted to captain. Under him, the team reached the final of the Cricket World Cup 2011, after he officially stepped down from the captaincy. In 2012, he was honored as one of Wisden 's Cricketer's of the Year.
