Kurt Helbig

Kurt Helbig ( born June 28, 1901 in Rödlitz, † 30 January 1975 in Plauen ) was a German weightlifter and Olympic champion in 1928 in the lightweight.

Life

Kurt Helbig grew up in Plauen in Vogtland, operating as a youth boxing, Rasenkraftsport and weight lifting, but soon moved entirely to the weight lifting. He was a trained butcher, but long years of work. Nevertheless, he increased his performances so enormous that he was at the Summer Olympic Games in Amsterdam Olympic champion in 1928. After his return his Olympic victory was celebrated enthusiastically in Plauen and he received from the City Council presented a gift of 100 Reichsmarks. This amount was then stripped him of his unemployment benefits again. Also in 1932 we went with him not squeamish. Although he had won the Olympic excretion and again was a medal candidate in the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, he was not sent, because there was no money for travel expenses. Annoyed, he finished his career then. According to him, Kurt Helbig Hall and the Kurt Helbig - square was named in Plauen. After his death in 1975 he was buried in the cemetery I in Plauen. His grave is now a protected monument.

Kurt Helbig 1959 gave a pair of his shoes sport a promising young athletes of his home town of Plauen. These shoes are on permanent loan at the sports club SV04 Oberlosa that engages in Plauen Kurt Helbig sports hall since September 2007.
