Kvernes Stave Church

The Stave Church Kvernes is a Norwegian stave church on the peninsula Averøya ten kilometers south of Kristiansund of Møre og Romsdal.

The church was first mentioned in 1432, but is probably much older. She was originally a single-aisled hall church with a choir in the breadth of the ship, but was heavily remodeled in the 17th century. 1633 were added in block design, a choir and a sacristy. Simultaneously, a baptistery was probably built from material of the earlier church at the west end of the church and the church received an additional Außenbeschalung.

Striking feature of the present church are outer diagonal supports. When these have been added, is not known. In the middle of the vessel a mast carrying the roof. The ship was painted in 1630 and 1650 with rich tendril decoration. The church has a shrine on the altar-piece with the picture of Mary and her mother and the child Jesus.

The church now belongs to the ancient association Fortidsminneforeningen.
