History

Opened in 1956 Ōyama Masutatsu in a small building behind Rikkyo University, his first official dojo and called his style Kyokushin (composed of the characters for Kyoku = whole, complete, and Shin = truth ).

He chose the name because of the saying: " After a thousand days of training you are a beginner, an expert after ten thousand days ( Champion)". In spite of hard training - there were a few limitations in the fight - and the high failure rate of students, the number of his pupils increased within a year to just over 700 students.

The next ten years Oyama built his organization, demonstrating his karate throughout the world to spread it. The first dojo outside Japan opened Bobby Lowe in 1957 in Hawaii.

Kyokushin Kaikan 1964, the Hombu was officially opened in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. Eisaku Satō was appointed President and Oyama to Kancho (Director ) of the IKO. Since then, Kyokushin has spread to more than 120 countries, the organization has over 10 million registered members - the movie " Fighter in the Wind" from 2004 about the life of Masutatsu Oyama called 20 million students in 140 countries around the world - to a of the largest martial arts organizations in the world.

In 1975, the first World Cup was held in Tokyo. 128 competitors from 36 countries took part. The first six ranks went to Japan: 1 Katsuaki Sato, 2 Hatsuo Royama ( Today he runs his own Kyokushin Karate Organization), 3 Yoko Ninomiya. The World Cup inspired the Kyokushin fighters, and soon the first national tournaments have been played in many countries: in 1975 in Australia, Malaysia, Israel and South Africa; 1976 in Brazil and England; In 1978 the first European Championship was held in London.

In April 1994, Oyama died at the age of 70 from lung cancer without a named successor to have and let Akiyoshi Matsui back as leaders of the IKO. This has brought many political and economic unrest in the world Kyokushinkai, which led to a fragmentation of the organization at the national and international level. At the international level, there are now several IKO organizations, the IKO1 (A. Matsui ), IKO2 shinkyokushinkai (K. Midori ), IKO3 (Y. Matsushima ), IKO4 ( T. Tezuka ).

So there is at the national level in Germany today several organizations, including the KKD ( Kyokushinkai Karate Germany ) and DKO ( German Kyokushin organization ) and the IKOK -D ( International Karate Organization Kyokushinkaikan Germany ). These are at the international level is not automatically in the IKO1, the IKOK -D is in the IKO1 ( Kyokushinkaikan Honbu ) and DKO in the WKO/IKO2 ( Midori ).

There are in addition to various organizations in the same style Kyokushin also varied style spin-offs such as Kyokushin Budo- kai, Kyokushindo or about Seidokan Karate.

Training

The training in Kyokushinkai is, as with most other karate styles, from Kihon (基本), Kata (形) and Kumite (組み 手). But even breathing techniques, breaking test ( Japanese: Tameshiwari ) and Abhärtungstechniken (芝 木Shibaki ) are part of the training. Physical training and kumite provide, however, often represents a large part of the training

Kumite

In Kumite is fought at the Kyokushin full contact, inter alia, in most organizations for Kumite these rules are common:

  • Attacks with fist, hand, finger and elbow techniques to the head of the opponent are not allowed
  • But kicks and knee kicks to the head are allowed
  • Punches, strikes or kicks to the knee joints, the spine and the genital area are not allowed
  • The gripping and / or holding the opponent is not allowed
  • Groin protector ( for males) and chest protector (women ) are mandatory. In normal training and boxing gloves and shin protectors are used

Kata

The Kata ( forms ) of Kyokushin Karate are described in the article about Karate Kata in " Kyokushin ". Well represented are the Taikyoku and Pinan kata, which originate from the Shotokan Karate. Coarse, the katas in Kyokushin Karate in a southern (eg Sanchin, Geksai Dai, Tensho ) and a northern ( Taikyoku, Pinan ) line can be distinguished.

About the kata, there are fixed, predetermined types of transition between Kihon Kumite and that Renraku / Rensoku ( Japanese: connection, transition) are mentioned and, in principle represent battle combinations in sparring stance.

Belt system

In many organizations, this graduation ranking is common, with black belts per Dan - degree wear a golden stripes:

Within a belt color and a black band is dependent on the organization for the next higher level within the color in student grades on the belt (Example 9 kyu: orange with black stripe, 7th Kyu: Blue with black stripe ).

Since the belt system partly depends strongly on the respective organization - depending on the organization bears the 10th Kyu a white or orange belt - is under Weblinks a reference to a page stored that compares the different systems of different Kyokushin organizations.

Belt colors

The variants of the belt system are combined basis, eg there is between the organizations to the point of the white belt differences: Students must in some associations the white belts earn by examination ( 10.Kyu ), while only the 9.Kyu wearing the color orange. In other of these is awarded ranglos without approval. There are also differences within a belt Color: It can be used for the higher Kyu same color - in the case of 9, 7, 5, 3, 1 Kyu - make a black line on the belt the higher rank visible.

Red is not provided in some organizations as the color for student grades, but orange (red is the color of the belt grandmasters reserved). Here are some variants of the belt system.
