L' Enfant et les Sortilèges ( The Child and the Enchantments ) is an opera by Maurice Ravel, which was completed in 1924 and premiered in 1925. The libretto was written by Sidonie -Gabrielle Colette.

Action

Part 1

A child sitting morosely at the desk. It has no desire to do his schoolwork. When his mother inquired about the progress of the work, the child stretched out her unceremoniously tongue. The mother is appalled: " tout seul Restez jusqu'au diner et surtout au songez chagrin de maman " The door closes. A boundless rage grabs the child. His destructive wrath is directed against the adult world that surrounds it. In one impetuous outburst it devastated his room and mercilessly torments his pets. The blind aggression follows the triumphant cry: " I ​​'m evil and free!".

Part 2

Then there is silence, only for a moment. Because suddenly done wondrous things: One after the other awaken the objects in the room to life: furniture, clock, cup, tea pot, fire, Shepherd of the wallpaper, fire, teacher of mathematics and cats sue the child and press it. Then disappear down the walls of the house. The child will be facilitated in the garden again. But the nightmare continues: frogs, dragonfly, bat and other animals blame the child, attack it, eventually begin to tear each other. A squirrel is thrown out from the crowd of fighting animals. Spontaneously the child connects the animal 's paw. The remaining animals freeze and fall silent. The spook has an end. With a joint transfiguring the piece ends: " It is good to the child, it is" say " (French for " like " and " wise " ), the animals sing appeased and escort the child back to Mama.

Formation

Colette and Maurice Ravel already met in 1900 at the Salon of Marguerite de Saint Marceaux, who became also frequented by Claude Debussy and Gabriel Fauré. Colette took Ravel true as distant and dry. It was not until 1914 Colette was had by Jacques Rouché, the director of the Paris Opera, prompted to write a draft for a Feenballett. From her brief sketch in prose, which she designed in eight days, Rouché was thrilled. He beat Maurice Ravel as composers before, but was at the same time bear in mind that the composition work could last longer. Ravel accepted the libretto, but then traveled to Verdun from 1916. As in 1917, died Ravel's Mother and pretended the mood to Le Tombeau de Couperin, he approached again Colette's designs and completed the opera in 1924. The premiere took place a year later at the Opéra de Monte Carlo.
