The North Star ( " L' Etoile du Nord ") is a comic opera in three acts by the composer Giacomo Meyerbeer. This work was 1849-1854 and was first performed on February 16, 1854 at the Opéra -Comique in Paris. In a modified second version had this opera on 19 July of the same year at the Royal Opera House in London Premiere.

Used for this work Meyerbeer six numbers out of a Singspiel, a field camp in Silesia. Ludwig Rellstab translated the libretto by Eugène Scribe in the same year, and the end of 1854 this opera was staged in Stuttgart.

Action

Disguised as a carpenter learns Tsar Peter Katharina know, the sister of George Carpenter Swaronsky. But before he can tell her she disappears. A little later Tsar Peter learns that Catherine, disguised as a soldier, recalled them military service for her brother George.

The military band performs; one hears marches and songs. Soldiers drill and there is a colorful camp life. Suddenly a recruit (Katharina ) crashes into the camp and tells of a conspiracy against the Tsar. Warned in time, it can crush the revolt and arrested the ringleaders.

Tsar Peter believes that Catherine is dead. But apparently she has gone insane. She is brought to St. Petersburg, and Tsar Peter leads them into his garden. There he has the village at Wiborg - can replicate - with Katharina where he met for the first time. When Catherine is aware of this, they come to their senses. Now the Tsar appears in its Zimmermann dress, and she instantly recognized him as her lover and throws herself into his arms. Reassured, he can now make known as Tsar, and make her a request.
