L'Isle-sur-Serein

L' Isle- sur -Serein is a commune with 741 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Yonne, in Burgundy; it belongs to the district Avallon and is the administrative center of the canton of L' Isle- sur- Serein.

History

The town lies on the River Serein, in a loop with an island, hence the name. He was mentioned 877 under the name Ilianencensis vicaria, and contributed to the French Revolution the name L' Isle- sous- Montréal. L' Isle- sur -Serein belonged to the lords of Montréal and was fortified in the 14th century.
