L'Islet, Quebec

L' Islet is a comune ( municipalité ) in the same MRC L' Islet administrative region Chaudière - Appalaches in Quebec, Canada.

Geography

The village is located approximately 100 km east of the provincial capital, Québec halfway to Rivière -du -Loup. It is located along Route 132 on the south bank of the estuary of the St. Lawrence River. According to the census of 2001 it had 3886 inhabitants with 1727 units. The area is 120.02 km ².

Within the town limits there are the three rivers: Rivière Tortue, Rivière Bras- Saint -Nicolas and the Rivière Talbot.

History

The original settlement was founded in 1677 by the dominions L' Islet -Saint -Jean de Bonsecours. The name of the village derives from a small island near the village of L' Islet -sur -Mer.

The municipality was formed in its present form in 2000 and formed from the merger with the former city of L' Islet and the places L' Islet -sur -Mer and Saint -Eugène.

The church of Notre -Dame-de - Bonsecours was built in 1768.

Personalities

L' Islet is the birthplace of the Bishop of Yoro, Jean -Louis Giasson ( b. 1939 ), and the organist Richard Gagné (born 1954 ).
