La Couronne, Bouches-du-Rhône

La Couronne (engl. " The Crown") is a district of the southern French community Martigues in the Bouches -du -Rhône. The village is located on the Mediterranean, on the Côte Bleue.

La Couronne - formerly carried the village its name Queyroun - lives mainly from tourism. It is especially known for its old quarries and lighthouses. The quarries were already mentioned by the Greeks Strabo. Excavations suggest that they were used as early as the 6th century BC. The Cap Couronne is the most outstanding point of land between the bay of Marseille and Fos -sur -Mer.

The old lighthouse was built in the second half of the 19th century. However, this was in 1963 destroyed and replaced a little later by a new one. On 12 December 2003, the lighthouse was added to the list of Monuments historiques.
