La Esmeralda Dam

The dam La Esmeralda (also called Chivor Dam ) is a dam on the river Río Batá in Colombia. The reservoir is located about 200 km northeast of Bogotá at the places Santa Maria and Tunja Boyacá in the district in northern Colombia.

The dam has a 237 m high rockfill dam, one of the highest in the world. It was built to produce electricity ( Chivor Hydroelectric Project) and makes five turbines with 1000 MW. The power plant is located 30 km downstream of the dam and will have a total drop of 1000 m. One-tenth of the energy demand of Colombia is generated by this hydroelectric power plant. In addition, the dam irrigation and water supply to the surrounding towns and communities it serves. Owner is the Empresa de Energía Bogotá ( EEB ).

The dam is approximately the eighth highest of the earth, and after the height of all existing dams ( with dams ), it ranks about 15th place

The construction period is specified elsewhere with 1977-1980. More discordant data are: height: 220 m, length: 800 m, water area: 10,000 hectares, Storage Space: 758 million m³, design flood ( performance of the spillway ): 11,400 m³ / s
