La Ferrière, Vendée

La Ferrière is a commune with 4892 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Vendée in the Pays de la Loire; it belongs to the administrative district of La Roche- sur- Yon and the Canton of Les Essarts. The village of La Ferrière emerged in the late Roman period as Thermelières. The inhabitants / residents call themselves " Ferriérois " / " Ferriéroise ( s ) ".

Geography

La Ferrière is drained by the River Yon, who first crosses the area in a north-westerly direction and then runs along the western boundary of the municipality to the south.

The municipality is located on the National Road 160, which crosses the city center. The highway highway 87 passes through the eastern municipality. The Les Ajoncs Airport ( " Aerodrome de La Roche- sur- Yon - Les Ajoncs ") is located in five kilometers away, the Atlantic Coast ( " Cote Vendéenne ") is on average 50 kilometers away.

History

The present name of the town originated in the Middle Ages and is derived from the Latin name for iron ( ferrum ) from which was obtained here from iron ore. The degradation of the mineral was carried out in mines in the former village Thermelières. Historians believe that the village was founded by the Romans when they visited their first settlements in Gaul and reduce the local natural resources and started to process. It was found near the mines remains of slag as obtained in the pig iron production.
