La Gamba

La Gamba is a small town in the southwest of the Central American country Costa Rica on the edge of the Esquinas rainforest and the rainforest of the Austrians.

Here live the 70 families (about 500 people) who live in single-storey houses, each with two or three rooms. In addition to drinking water and electricity provides the infrastructure of the town, including two Pulperias ( Greißlereien ), a public telephone, a school, and two churches.

As the main source of income for the local population ( colloquially Ticos and Ticas ) serves agriculture and animal husbandry, which are ostensibly operated to meet its own requirements. In addition, also find professions such as tailors, carpenters, builders, mechanics, taxi operators and more. Fixed appointments are due to the uncertain economic conditions rather rare and casual work therefore predominant. One of the few exception in this framework, which was founded by Michael Schnitzler 1991 Project Rainforest of the Austrians and the resultant in this context Station La Gamba on the outskirts of the village dar. addition to the thus created fixed work, this project has a lasting effect in the field of nature conservation and species protection and creates an awareness of the local population in dealing with their habitat.
